Frank Holton & Company began manufacturing tubas by 1904, and this is when the earliest example at the National Music Museum was made. Some tubas from the mid-1910s contain both Chicago and Elkhorn identifying marks. Tubas were continuously produced throughout the 20th century. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, some models were produced in Japan, likely outsourced to K.H.S., who had previously provided parts to Holton (under Leblanc). A few years after becoming part of Conn-Selmer, Holton tuba production was halted to reassess brand strategy.
